Two big tests coming up for Hollywood: Wonder Woman, which is getting strong early reviews, and The Mummy, with Tom Cruise. The Mummy is the first film of the planned “Dark Universe,” new takes on horror movies of the past. Current plans are to follow up with The Wolfman and Bride of Frankenstein. The Mummy tanking could spoil a lot of plans...

Wonder Woman actually looks very good. The Mummy looks terrible, IMO.

The shared universe addiction really needs to go away. Canon drags down stories. And really adding a bunch of canon isn’t going to make the old Hammer Horror better.

The Mummy has one of the worst trailers I’ve ever seen. The Monsterverse is looking to be off to a really bad start.

Marvel built their universe organically. DC is forcing theirs, with apparently one good movie out of the four released to date. The Kaijuverse started with a cooly received Godzilla and a warmly received Skull Island. Anybody’s guess where that one goes, but I don’t think the majority of the audience even knows they’re building towards something.
