Madison County mail carrier accused of feeding nails to neighborhood dogs

A Madison County mail carrier is charged in an animal cruelty case.

Madison County Sheriff's deputies charged Susanna Burhans, 47, with aggravated animal cruelty after they say she fed meaty treats with dangerous ingredients to dogs along her route.

Ed Glover tells WHNT News 19 Burhans was his mail carrier.

He found one of the meatballs on the ground by his mailbox at his New Hope home, and discovered that the meatball was filled with nails. He believes the mail carrier had already fed one to his dog, Missy.

He became worried about Missy, and tells us he took her to the veterinarian. Glover showed us x-rays he says were taken that day, and nails are clearly visible inside the dog's stomach.

Glover is happy Burhans was charged Thursday. He said he wants the system to do what is right, so no other pets can be harmed. He hopes Burhans does not return to her job as a mail carrier.

Burhans is released from the Madison County Jail on a $2500 bond.

If the dog was a nuisance or was coming after the mail carrier, she can refuse to deliver the mail. You don’t have to feed the dumb dog nail filled meatballs.

That is worse than Fred McMurray, mailman, getting out his double barrel shotgun every time he sees a dog, especially a shaggy one.

The focus should be on pitbulls and other useless attack dogs running free. Leave fido alone.

I will say that technically given the size anticipated to fit within a meatball they are likely tacks and not nails. That being said I hope she goes to jail for her crime.

Since it is unlikely they could fire her, she will most likely go into management.

No, I’m not making this up.

Agreed. The safest place for her would be prison. She better hope for a long sentence.

She may (may) lose her letter carrier position, but they won’t fire her. If they do, she’ll get her job back plus back pay, including overtime. Sort of like a very, very long paid vacation. Possibly she would become a clerk, or go into management.

And that is exactly what is wrong with our civil service job system. No one should be immune from being fired. It’s also why tenured professors believe they can do anything without reprisals. Sadly they appear to be correct.
