Most likely the biggest reason why Trump is hated is because he’s using the tactics of the Left (like this, and especially Alinsky) right back in their faces. The smart ones recognize it and need it stopped...and probably figure that Pence will be more likely to want to set a ‘new tone’ (rightly or wrongly, doesn’t matter, just get Trump out).

Seriously, I think Hillary used the Rich murder as a platform to call for more gun control. That campaign didn't take root, but it was planted.
