it seems silly that eating dogs and cats is illegal in this country. But that’s what government is good for, dictating the private choices people make in a way that gets politicians re-elected.

I mean, I understand why someone who had a cat they loved would never eat that cat. But it seems rather pretentious for a person to say “well, I love my cat, so you can’t eat a cat”.

The U.S. prohibited the sale of horses for meat (in 2013, I think) when it was learned that a Kentucky Derby winner had been sold to a Japanese meat market. When that happened, the price for a horse hit rock bottom. You literally couldn't give them away. My cousin told me they were very careful to keep an eye on their trailer at a horse show. If you didn't, someone would load two horses they couldn't afford to keep and leave. Or you would have to put a lock on your pasture gate to prevent someone unloaded horses in the night.
