President Donald Trump says he wants Florida Gov. Rick Scott to challenge incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in next year's elections.
Trump on Friday told a crowd gathered in Miami that "I hope he runs" for the U.S. Senate. Scott has already said he is considering running for the seat held by Nelson in 2018.
Nelson, the only statewide elected Democrat in Florida, has already said he plans to run for a fourth term.
Scott was sitting near Trump when he made his comments. Trump looked over at the Republican governor and asked "Rick? Are you running?"
Scott and other prominent Florida Republicans joined Trump for his announcement that he was making changes to Cuban policies put in place by President Barack Obama. The new policy is only a partial reversal from that of the Obama administration.
The only problem with Rick running is leaving Florida for D.C. Yuk!!! I’d be a tough decision.

Why would a state governor want to be a senator?
As governor, he’s in charge; as a senator, he’s just a voice in the crowd.
I was an early and often critic of Rick Scott when he ran for governor of Florida. The basis being his pushing the legal envelope as a former for profit healthcare executive. However, from afar, it looks like he has done a good job in the Sunshine State and would appear to be a great candidate for the Senate.
Not certain whether Scott is term limited but I’d prefer him to remain in Tallahassee.
Already lost the governor’s seat in NC and who knows who will follow Kasick (stet) in Ohio.
President Trump won PA despite a dem in Harrisburg.
He also carried Michigan without Snyder’s backing.
Branstad (now Ambassador to China) was helpful in Iowa so not sure about the future in Des Moines.
Governor Walker finally came through in the clutch to deliver Wisconsin.
Hopefully, there will be another strong candidate to oust or succeed Bill Nelson.
A Florida Governor can only serve two consecutive terms of four years. They then have to stay out of office for four years before running again.
So, yes, he would be good to go to run for the Senate. Governor Childs (Dem) did so.

The Governor of Florida is term limited - two four year terms and he’s out.
The reason given for NOT running a strong canadiate against Nelson is he’s so popular he’ll bring out democrats who don’t normally vote - - and those extra voters will defeat down ballot Republicans. That said, Trump’s right. This might be the time to do it...
One reason might be that the decisions he makes/votes he casts have much farther reaching effect that what’s done in a single state.
It’s the usual progression for professional politicians, especially the ones who fantasize about someday living in a mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue. And in Scott’s case he’s in his second terms and can’t run for reelection. If I was him I’d retire or return to the private sector, but political power of all sorts can be quite addictive once you’re hooked.
The guy supported Trump so I guess Trump wants him in the Senate.
I see Rick Scott as a rep of the healthcare industry-lobby that wants to get Obamacare ‘repealed’ more in its favor than what Obamacare was.
He will be term limited out as governor after this term I believe so running for the senate seat would be a great idea.I bet he could take that seat held by nelson.
Nelson’s brain dead. Has been for awhile. I would love to see Scott take his seat but don’t have high hopes.
That would be nice and he might actually win. Scott isn’t exactly warm and fuzzy, but he manages to get his point across when campaigning.
I haven’t agreed with everything he’s done here in Florida, but on the whole he has been good, effective and serious about being governor. You get the feeling some pols don’t really take their jobs seriously, but he has always struck me as somebody who takes it seriously and really works at it.
Term limits. He can’t run again.

In light of that, I now hope Rick Scott does defeat Bill Nelson because he definitely should not have to sit on the sidelines. Although, a senate seat is a step down in power compared to running an entire state.
