He recommended on taking evasive action immediately upon sighting a large vessel.

Perhaps the Navy needs to make Capt. Trimmer's classic How to Avoid Huge Ships required reading. Check out the reviews on Amazon. For example, "After reading Capt. Trimmer's book, the largest thing I've been hit by is a diesel bus".

Seems deliberate to me. Sort of reminds me of the Amagiri splitting PT-109 in half.

"My question is why no evasive measures!"

There are two possible explanations:

1. Criminal negligence by the Captain and crew of the destroyer.

2. The container ship's erratic course prior to striking the destroyer could indicate the container ship was stalking the destroyer. To successfully stalk the destroyer, the container ship would have had to have had radar cloaking equipment, and the purpose of this attack was to test the effectiveness of this radar cloaking equipment against a U.S. warship. If so, the attack was successful, and their radar cloaking equipment has been proven effective against our warships.

I have never been in the Navy, know next to nothing about ships or sailing but look at that cargo carrier.

There is no way that huge thing could stalk and hit a destroyer. I bet it takes miles to turn around. Just plain common sense.

A friend called me the morning of 9/11 to say turn on the tv and I immediately said it had to have been that O Ben whats his name without any further information.

This incident, the same. It was intentional. Now, seeing the U turn of the cargo ship, no doubt whatsoever. Throw in the no radar or lights.

The only question is why the heck did we not see it and act in time?

Maybe the transponder was providing inaccurate information? In that case, who knows what course the container ship had actually taken.

There are pictures in other threads showing the cargo ships track. How would that track be available if the transponder was off?

Maybe the cargo ship has a GPS that records its track and the log of its track was made available. Or, maybe someone in the "media" made it up to try and sell a juicy story.

The REAL story is too frightening to even think about, so the authorities made up the collision story to keep the public from panicking.

You see, the whales have become so enraged at our lack of concern for climate change that they are now attacking ships in revenge. In this case, two whales attacked two ships at the same time. They are really pissed at humans, and it will only get worse... if we don't all cough up a lot more money and let the ultra-rich climate change experts deal with this problem for us.

Thankfully we had a small boat radar and could pick them up, calculate their course and take evasive action.

Yet, you were able to avoid a disaster with one person on watch with an over the counter radar set up unlike a big bad US Navy destroyer with a dozen on watch with all the latest top secret equipment. It's not just fishy but rotten fishy.

How do two ships collide in open water except on purpose?

Plenty of radar controlled collisions have taken place over the years especially in the days before true-motion displays. It's quite possible the container ship had no lookouts posted, just on autopilot. Not unusual at all. Still, Fitz should've seen it coming.

They sealed off all the berthing rooms, essentially trapping the sailors because they thought no one was in any of the rooms to avoid sinking the ship.”

No. Not that.

It's not just fishy but rotten fishy.

I agree 100%.

Plus I didn't mention the fact that it can take a merchant ship a long time and distance to come to a stop.

Anywhere from a half mile to a mile or more.

I wonder if the Navy ship was trying to close on the cargo ship and board her?
