Years ago, before starting a teaching assignment overseas, I bought a book titled Going Abroad. The title was a pun. The book was a description of toilet practices in various foreign countries. Interesting, somewhat frightening, but very helpful.

I never did master the "hole in the floor" toilets in Turkish restrooms.

It’s everywhere. Or at least it needs to be. I worked at a university where they were forced to address this issue in new student orientation every single year. Sit on the toilet, don’t squat on it. Try to aim better. Flush TP, don’t throw it on the floor. Don’t use any porcelain bowl-shaped object you happen across for relieving yourself. They tried subtlety, but in the end, they wound up having to just spell it out bluntly.
