WOLFEBORO — Police and animal welfare groups rescued 84 Great Dane dogs living in squalid conditions on Friday and have charged the owner with animal neglect.

Christina Fay, 60, of 149 Warren Sands Road, Wolfeboro, was arrested on two misdemeanor counts of neglect and released on personal recognizance bail on the condition that she not possess any animals while the charges remain pending against her.

Wolfeboro Chief of Police Dean Rondeau said the investigation is ongoing and that additional arrests could be made and more charges filed.

The seized dogs ranged in age from puppies (some just a few weeks old) to juvenile and adult dogs. A number of the massive canines had free roam of the house — a gated mansion with eight bedrooms and nine baths.

I'm the human daddy to a wonderful 115 lb. mantled Great Dane. They're wonderful dogs, with a usual retail price of about $2,000 per puppy. Although the article says none is up for adoption yet, a substantial number, including puppies not yet born, many may become available, especially after legal proceedings are over. Any FReeper who's interested in adopting a truly wonderful dog, while doing a great good deed for a truly deserving animal, should look into it.

People should never buy from pet shops or online. Always go to the place and look at the conditions, meet the dog’s parents so to speak. there are so many of these puppy mills in PA and in OH.

115 lb. mantled Great Dane

When I owned one they were called "Bostons", and 115 lbs is light for that type.

They are wonderful dogs. They are naturally gentle and affectionate. But people should be aware they come with special requirements. Because of their size they eat more than most breeds, and cleanup is a bigger chore. Vet bills are higher.

While you can get away with spoiling a Boston Terrier, a super size dog must be properly trained for his well being and the safety of those around him.

Great Danes also break your heart much earlier than longer-lived breeds.

You, too must be a Daney daddy. Labs are the same way. That’s what makes both breeds so wonderful.
