Open conflict between Russia and the United States is heating up in Syria. After American forces shot down a Syrian fighter jet, Russia suspended use of an Obama-era communications line used to prevent collisions and conflict, and threatened to shoot down American planes.
America's Syria policy was and continues to be absolutely moronic. But this alarming development is also a reminder that there is simply no alternative to diplomatic engagement with Russia, the world's only other nuclear superpower. That's something both the American military, and liberals fired up over Trump's Russia scandal, would do well to remember.
In the discussion about climate change risk management, I have argued that somewhat unlikely disaster scenarios deserve serious consideration, because it's worth a substantial cost to avoid even a small chance of a huge harm. (It's basic insurance reasoning.) The same is true of nuclear war.
An all-out nuclear exchange between the United States and Russia is one of the few things that could threaten human extinction. Hundreds of millions, perhaps billions, would be killed in the immediate attack, blowing the world economic system apart, and beginning what would probably be several years of nuclear winter, devastating agriculture. People might survive in remote locations perhaps Australia and New Zealand but it's not at all guaranteed in such an extreme scenario. It would be the worst disaster in history, by several orders of magnitude.

Is Trump hostage to the Neocons in order to save his presidency?
The Week is a NYT publication, part of the fake news conspiracy.
It serves only the interests of the EU/marxist globalists for Russia and the United States to be divided and fight each other. What good would a war do? US involvement in the Mideast quagmire does not enhance the security of the American people. The Mideast is violent and unstable because Islamic culture is unable to cope successfully with the values, practices and institutions of modernity. Leave it alone to transform or collapse.
I agree with thsi statement. Unless we're annihilating ISIS there's no good reason for an American presence in Syria. Assad is not a good guy but he's also not our problem. I'm sick to death of the neocon philosophy that says every conflict in the world, especially in the M.E., is a direct threat to American National Security and therefore we must be involved.
As for the ridiculous anti-Trump twaddle that punctuates the rest of this article...the writer can go to hell.
“Russia suspended use of an Obama-era communications line used to prevent collisions and conflict, and threatened to shoot down American planes.”
According to a Pentagon 4 Star Gen appearing on FNC last evening this is a lie. There has been NO interruption in the communications.
Fake News!
“Is Trump hostage to the Neocons in order to save his presidency?”
One has to wonder. His campaign emphases were to break off from the Obama era agitation and undermining, but it seems little has changed. I’m waiting to see how it pans out, but there is nothing good for the US in the ME snakepit.
Right. We are in bed with the Russians but they want to attack us at the same time...unicorns and rainbows from the left.
Do like Rush says and ignore the media; they, including Beck, want a war with Russia to advance their globalist causes and to mask the Ukrainian treason Hitlery did with them and her foundation.
I can only hope a case is being made against Hitlery and her foundation behind the scenes that will dig a hole so deep she, Bill and Chelsea and Podesta will be buried for life. When no one expects it, the case will be brought forth - I can only hope. Maybe this is what Sessions and his team is working on, because we aint heard from them.
“The Week is a NYT publication, part of the fake news conspiracy.”
Thanks for the information.
That means even the NYT is smarter than any Neocon that ever spoke or wrote a single word.
And the Russians hacked the election in order to put in the one candidate who would stand up to them??
I would agree with txrefugee
But your conclusion is a bit over the top.
Can someone help me understand why we are in Syria at all at this point? What geopolitical gain is there for us there?
If we were truly fighting isis, we would be obliterating them. Instead we are propping up a third rebel group.
Nothing else makes sense for us to be there.
Before we bombed Serbia and pretended the Serbs were committing genocide, we asked Milosevic to let us run a pipeline through the country. He said no.
The reason this article is interesting is that it shows a gradual shift in the collective mind of the left...the only mind they have.
Of course it’s filled with leftist tripe, it’s a NYT publication.
But the NYT has never been part of the Neocon mindshare. And their readers are hearing from their great mindshare leader: Conflict with Russia is worse than Trump and Global Warming combined.
Please take a moment, if you can, to consider that.
I do believe you got the right idea by suggesting “Leave them alone to transform or collapse” Instead of importing this (i)slamic nuisance.
The Russians signalling they are not intimidated, after we signaled the same.
No good will come from any of this.
I see John McCain in my head as I read this.
and he’s most concerned about his “essence”...
We’re probably doing the Saudis’ and the Gulf States’ bidding.
The Euroweenies want to put a NG pipeline through Syria to reduce dependency on Sov, er, Russia natural gas. Since Assad is a Russian client, this means regime change. Hence our support of ‘democratic’ forces in Syria.
We should hand the keys to Assad and Russia, tell the Euroweenies to pound sand, and leave.
It's beginning to look that way.
When President Trump took office there was an opening for detente and cooperation between the US and Russia. The MSM, Neocons, and Deep Staters have hammered, and hammered, and hammered 24/7 relentlessly to destroy that possibility.
Now Russia and US are on the verge of a shooting war. The Bill Kristols and John McCains of the world are in a state of sexual ectasy over this. This is what happens when you choose Jared over Steve Bannon.
Steve Bannon has known how to play the game. He's a veteran in more ways than one. Jared is a naive New York investor who is really a Jared-Come-Lately to all of this. And he is getting steamrolled and doesn't even know it … or maybe he is actually one of them.
