Eric Holder is set to re-emerge on the national political scene, wrote Steve Benen in a blog entitled, “Former AG Eric Holder: ‘Now is the time to be heard.’” Benen, a producer for The Rachel Maddow Show, argued that Holder has recently begun to increase his number of public appearances and that more may follow in the near future.
Furthermore, he observed that there’s now active speculation that Holder may be musing a presidential run for 2020. Strangely enough, however, the blog failed to mention any of the baggage that would accompany such a run given Holder’s controversial record as U.S. Attorney General.
According to Benen, Holder is currently involved with the creation of a PAC designed to spearhead “resistance” efforts against the agenda and message of President Donald Trump. He has also been asked by his former boss, Barack Obama, to play a leading role in the national redistricting set to take place in 2020.
But, the truly noteworthy part of the blog came when Benen cited a Yahoo! News report mentioning the possibility of Holder seeking the White House in 2020. “Holder didn’t say he’s planning to run for any public office,” Benen stated, “and it’s entirely possible that he’s taking these actions solely out of a sense of public duty, unrelated to any electoral ambitions he may or may not have.”
The blog neglected to highlight any of Eric Holder’s previously unsavory moments while a member of the Obama administration, ranging from his involvement with the fast and furious scandal to him being the only attorney general in U.S. history to be held in contempt of Congress.
But, who knows? Given the current potential roster of Democratic presidential candidates for 2020, it may not even emerge as an issue should he seek his party's nomination.
