Well known by who? Did you go over to the farm and observe him doing it? Did you see bruised women? Did some of them tell you that? Did you or they tell the authorities?
The local Social Worker who did site visits at the farm made a public statement that she was unaware of any impropriety, and could not sustain a complaint against him.
Why is this important?
It is important because neither the sheriff, the social worker, or anyone else was able to provide evidence that supported the military assault on the farm.
There was no justification for the assault. Period.

Yes.
Just because a group of evil people conceal wrongdoing, eliminating witnesses to a crime, it doesn't mean a crime isn't occurring. Again, for people, first hand involved, the abuse and rape was well known.
Defense of infant abuse and underage rape can not be justified.
