The immigration rhetoric and crackdowns pushed by President Donald Trump have a familiar ring in Arizona, where former Sheriff Joe Arpaio once used similar tactics to become a national figure.
Now, Arpaio is going on trial on a criminal charge stemming from those immigration enforcement actions.
His eight-day trial that begins Monday in federal court in Phoenix will determine whether the 85-year-old retired lawman is guilty of misdemeanor contempt of court for disobeying a judge’s order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants. The judge later found his officers racially profiling Latinos.
Arpaio’s legal troubles played a major role in voters turning him out of office in November after a campaign in which he appeared alongside Trump at several rallies in Arizona. …

So who is in contempt of what, Arpaio who was duty bound to enforce the law or the judge who ignored his duty not not to obstruct law enforcement? It seems the prosecutor and the judge should be on trial, not the Arpaio. How this case is allowed to continue is beyond me. AG Sessions is not taking care of business.

There have been other calls for Trump to pardon Joe. I’d sure like to see that happen. Then appointing Joe a U.S. Marshal...that would be icing on the cake.

Federal judge’s name is G. Murray Snow. Appointed by Dubya in 2007 and confirmed by the Democratic-majority Senate in 2008.
