President Trump's national security adviser said Wednesday that the administration is considering a wider range of strategies on how to deal with North Korea, including the military option.
The threat is much more immediate now and so its clear that we cant repeat the same approach failed approach of the past, H.R. McMaster, the adviser, said during a security conference with Homeland Security Chief John Kelly.
He said it would be insanity to continue to do the same thing the U.S. has done for years and expect a different result.
McMasters comments come a day before Trump is scheduled to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. South Koreas new leader vowed to stand firmly with Trump against North Korea, downplaying his past advocacy for a softer approach toward the isolated regime.
"Together we will achieve the dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear program, peace on the Korean Peninsula and eventually peace in Northeast Asia," Moon said.

People talk about the huge amount of N Korean artillery and all the deaths that will result in our ally S Korea as soon as trouble starts. Maybe so. But that is always the excuse for Appeasement — you have to give the Nazis what they want, because they are scary people and if you make trouble, people will die. This strategy did not save lives in WWII and it will not save lives in Korea. Long range missiles and nuclear weapons are a bad thing. So make them go away and accept the fact that people will die.
I’m glad McMaster is developing a strategy. Hopefully it will minimize the loss of life and get the job done quickly.
I knew North Korea was the main crisis point the new president would face in his first year. I don’t remember the candidates speaking about it extensively but they may have.
Shock and Awe Chapter 2? It could be quite interesting.
Any Freepers out there who know about how the artillery on North Korea’s border is sited, and if we have any kind of ordnance that could effectively render it harmless?
IIRC, they claim to have thousands of pieces dialed in on Seoul. Impossible to neutralize or counter.
South Korea wants our military out of their country anyway. Its time to go.
The Pentagon has long developed contingency plans for just about every theoretical situation it might encounter. The idea is to set down all the general, unchanging data, so if the situation does happen, they can use it as a framework for the new data. Significantly speeding up the planning process.
The more likely a scenario, the more often it is updated and war-gamed.
What I have heard is that this can be done in a 60 second cycle.
“Impossible to neutralize or counter.”
Bullshit.

A single B-1B can carry 80 of these per sortie. They can also be carried by every tactical aircraft in inventory.
And this before any counter-battery is employed.
The very last thing in the world you want to be is a man in NORK’s artillery corps.
It probably suffices to bend the doors enough so they jam.
Blasting a couple tons of rock loose above them probably suffices as well...
Kim will either be killed by the USA or China.
His future looks bleak.
He needs to die or millions will die.
And it might actually entail some real shock and awe....
South Korea and the USA have been watching NK for decades. They know much more than we can imagine. I imagine they have had a plan for decades also. Grab some popcorn when it starts.
Agreed - and I'll be glad I'm not over there when it does.
When I was at Osan in '85 - '86, General George Livesey was the force commander. He would get on AFRTS and talk about how his soldiers was ready with their weapons and tanks, etc. Then he would say, "Hear that North Korea, we're ready so c'mon down".
I would look at my calendar and say, "Stay up for at least another x months".
It was reported yesterday that China’s state oil company has suspended all its shipments to North Korea. Those shipments are badly needed by North Korea, economically and militarily. That leaves the North with what supplies it has. It could get very jittery up there.
No doubt our DOD believes it is best to be prepared, should the NK dictator decide it’s now or never.
Some 14 million people - maybe more now - in easy artillery range of nK. And our current strategy HAS worked for over 60 years.
The military has had options planned for Korea for decades. Those options are under constant revision. And have been for decades.
It's refreshing to see a President allowing his Generals to do their jobs conducting war.
