The White House has threatened Venezuela with "strong and swift" action unless President Nicolas Maduro calls off a July 30 "constitutional congress", which the US believes will push the South American country further towards a dictatorship.
Mr. Maduro, who has now faced more than 100 days of protests, killing around 100 people, insists that the congress to rewrite the constitution is the only way to restore calm in the troubled country, which has the largest oil reserves in the world, and was once a stable, middle class nation.
But his opponents say the congress will cement his "dictatorship".
On Tuesday a senior White House official said that "all options are on the table" if Venezuela goes ahead with the vote.
"The president is very concerned about the well being of the Venezuelan people, the incredible erosion of democracy right before our eyes," the official said.
"And he has instructed us to do everything we can to support democracy there.".......

The shortages of food and medicine are real enough.
A story was posted on a Columbian website saying a seven year old girl had starved to death in Maricaibo, Venezuela.
President Trump is facing a national security threat if the socialistic system continues in Venezuela.
Millions will move across borders with the strong possibility of the USA as an ultimate target.
There’s something wrong with this story’s link.
Bomb them with MRE’s and cup o’ noodles and call for violent overthrow. Use stealth bombers. Tell Cuba they’re next.
I don’t think Brazil and Columbia wants them.
It’s a full on dictatorship now. I don’t understand the motivation for threats about details. Madurai is beyond any legislative or electoral process. Nothing will change peacefully.
Simon Bolivar would be PROUD. He was ruthless, vindictive a strong arm, and never really brought democracy to the region, only military juntas.
Two divisions. One Marine, and the 82nd. One carrier battle group. Two months and a new democracy is born, a message sent to Cuba, and Iranian influence erased from South America.
No option that’s Constitutional, of course. LOL.
Well both nations remember when the shoe was on the other foot and Venezuela took them in until the chaos they were going through calmed. So I suspect they won’t protest much....just the normal upheavel refugees can sometimes cause a nation.
From your lips to Gods ears
No, it won't, and Obama sat by while American companies were nationalized, and that intellectual midget Kerry was down there sucking up to that a**h**e Madura.
Meanwhile, I'm quire sure there are ‘academics’ and leftists (yeah, I know - redundant) who will blame the US for the failure of Venezuela's failed attempt at a socialist paradise. These people are out of their minds. Totally. Further, they are too delusional to know how genuinely stupid they are.
Why hasn’t President Trump asked Bernie Sanders to be a Special Ambassador to Venezuela to show them how Socialism is supposed to work?? Hell, why not send a few Million COllege Socialists to live in Utopia?
But his opponents say the congress will cement his “dictatorship”. On Tuesday... ................. Maybe the opposition should elect a separate president? Kinda like here. Venezuela could turn into another Spain circa 1936, I kinda see it coming.
Wouldn't you love it if senior White House officials talked like that when warning democraps against voting to block the wall, or block the repeal of Obamacare, or block the travel ban, etc.? ... "The president is very concerned about the well being of the Venezuelan American people, and the incredible erosion of democracy right before our eyes, and ALL OPTIONS ARE ON THE TABLE unless the forces of dictatorship, aka the democrap party, backs off!," the official said.
How about we just stay out of it. Sometimes a country’s best and highest use is to act as a warning to others.
I agree. Our interest was when they nationalized our companies. Now? No. Let it go down the craphole.
Excellent point.
Food for thought...
It is not mostly good Venezuelans crossing into Colombia. It is mostly black market smugglers and gangs and they are bringing worse crime to areas that previously seemed attractive to live in.
Taking out the Maduro dictatorship would in a very short time also take out the Castro dictatorship.
