De Blasio's Subway Follies

It seems like a rerun -– but maybe this time, people will have learned their lesson.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Chairman Joe Lhota aren’t getting along too well these days. Lhota, who ran on the Republican ticket for mayor four years ago and was unfortunately defeated by de Blasio, is now again challenging de Blasio on a new quality of life issue -- subway garbage, which has become such a problem that it caused a major subway track fire last week, resulting in many injuries and awful transit delays. (There are numerous New York City subway track fires per year.)

Lhota was recently tasked to clean up the MTA -- after having manned the MTA’s infrastructure restoration following Hurricane Sandy -- and one of the ideas he floated was to restrict eating on the subway. The subway already has a disgusting excess of garbage and rats, and it was garbage littered onto the tracks in a Harlem subway station which caused the recent track fire and massive delays.

Lhota’s suggestion certainly sounds reasonable. It will not solve all subway problems, but it may prevent some of them and can thus make subway travel safer and cleaner. Seeing that New York City has been experiencing a terrible decline in quality of life -- not to mention a spike in subway crime -- one would expect de Blasio to reply to Lhota, “Thanks, Joe. Wish I would have thought of that myself.”

Instead, de Blasio rejected Lhota’s idea and responded:

While i loathe blasio, it’s not reasonable to cut off eating in the subway. Especially, since more brainstorming would come up with more ideas, short of an eating ban.

What about more pails, signs, ads. Could get creative with the ads, depicting how trash promotes ‘rats (as opposed to blasio-like ‘Rats).

This is another thing I don’t understand — de Blasio is a communist supposedly but the “proletariat” is dependent on the subways. Look at the USSR and other urban communist and fascist governments. The subways were a source of pride and grandeur. I.e. Moscow.

In fact, the debacle with the New York City subways could end up defeating De Blasio in the upcoming NYC Mayoral election.

Why? Because the LAST thing you want as Mayor in New York City is a subway system breaking down, affecting millions of riders per day.

In Proverbs, King Solomon tells us that laziness and self-indulgence breed inefficiency and ultimately result in destruction.

Looking around... Proverbs 21:25 - The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

“...depicting how trash promotes ‘rats (as opposed to blasio-like ‘Rats).”

As a matter of being more effective and accurate, they should depict how trash promotes rats and display pictures of De Blasio.

Or to be non-partisan, substitute a picture of Bloomberg.

I would go further than Lhota. I’d ban ALL vendors within the subway system - no vendors = less trash from what people buy from the vendors.

The Vancouver light rail transit system - its goes huge distances in four directions has NO vendors at all in the system Cleanest public transit system I’ve seen.

(One BIG drawback it has also is ZERO, and I mean ZERO public restrooms anywhere on the system)

The Russians didn't elevate certain minority groups as special status slobs exempt from the rules the hoi polloi were expected to follow.

Is DiBlasio going to bring graffiti back to the subways that had their hayday when DiBlasio was Dinkins’ assistant. DiBlasio is trying to outdo Mayor Dinkins for the title of New York’s worst mayor. Once garbage, always garbage.

I don’t think it’s fair to people to say you can’t eat on the subway… I think in a lot of ways we need to encourage people to not be sloppy when they’re on the subway,

I agree with you in regard with banning eating on the subway but good luck, blasio, with your anti-slob program. De' blasio loves slobs.
