While Cook County battles in court to impose a tax on sweetened beverages, so-called soda taxes are popping up across the country.

Cook County would be the biggest place to impose the tax, following in the footsteps of Albany, Berkeley and Oakland in California, Philadelphia, and Boulder, Colorado. San Francisco and Seattle are set to begin taxing sweetened beverages on Jan. 1, 2018.

I’m unable to drink sweetened soda these days, but people should be outraged by these taxes - the government has no right to use taxes to try to shape peoples dietary habits, or to use peoples dietary habits to generate revenue for itself.

Cook County would be smart to raise the tax on Skittles, if they really want to balance the budget.

Liberals are truly clueless about economics.

But they will enrich those that own stores outside of the municipality limits.

Similar to banning bottled water, neighboring communities could reap the benefits.

It’s obvious what’s happening here. Bankrupt governments have figured out that the only way to remain solvent is to impose highly regressive taxes so they can squeeze money from the leeches they’ve been supporting for years.

Now running TV ads in Philadelphia showing the little tykes “graduating” from Pre-K after the first year of the expanded program which was paid for by the new Philly soda tax of last year - at the end of the ad comes the announcement “Paid for by Michael Bloomberg” - it’s a nationwide push which would seem to have only one big payoff - for the Teachers’ union......

The DemonRATs want their slaves back. It’s not racist this time. This time slavery is for everybody. Just like it was before 1782.

Good,soda is garbage.

That's fine, don't drink it. But the government has no business trying to tax people who do.

they don’t call it a soda tax- but in the last 2 years- a 24 pack of pepsi used to go for around $4.50-5.00 regularly- it’s now going for around 8-9 dollars just two years later- likely due to climate change regulations imposed on businesses who then have to push the cost increase off onto customers-

It’s amazing how fast prices rose once obama took office- could get a big bag of chips for around $1.50 or so before he took office- then a couple years later you now pay over $4.00- cereal used to be dirt cheap- not anymore-milk- same thing- heck- everything rose drastically after obama took office- Gasoline prices remained fairly steady for a great many years at around the $1.00 mark per gallon- I drove for a great many years- paying right around $1.00 (started off paying only around .55 p.gallon) then all of a sudden we’re up to $4.60 a gallon during obama administration- Granted he didn’t control oil prices- but it’s just strange that when he took office- EVERYTHING rose dramatically

Albany, Berkeley and Oakland in California, Philadelphia, and Boulder, Colorado. San Francisco and Seattle...

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy...

Honestly, it isn't the product - I don't touch the stuff - it's the attitude that the local commissars can tax it for your own good that grates.

actually it’s the cost of high fructose corn syrup that has raised the cost of soda.

It is also the reason some brands are bringing back cane sugar soda.

Why do we need the government interfering with our lives? It’s the grab for money
and has nothing to do with health.
