DHS waives environmental laws to begin building Trump border wall

Homeland Security triggered a waiver Tuesday allowing the department to bypass environmental and other land protection laws in order to begin building and testing President Trump’s new border wall.

The waivers apply to San Diego, where officials already plan to upgrade miles of existing fence, but where they’ll also stage a competition this summer to build and test prototypes for Mr. Trump’s wall.

It’s the first in what’s likely to be a series of waivers that will be needed as wall construction ramps up.

Officials insisted they will still try to be mindful of local impacts as they work on the wall.

“While the waiver eliminates DHS’s obligation to comply with various laws with respect to covered projects, the department remains committed to environmental stewardship with respect to these projects,” the department said in a statement.

Wouldn’t it be the Dept of the interior to do this?

I wouldn’t mind seeing them start in Organ Pipe NM first.

When loyalty to “party” supercedes loyalty to “country”, you get what we have now in our great country...

Hopefully, some of this will be eradicated in the 2018 primaries...

Summer ends in September, the 22nd to be exact. I wouldn’t call it half way over when it only just started on Jun 21st.

And San Diego/Tijuana is one area that really needs the wall. Back in the 80’s I used to see wetbacks running the fence, sprinting across the highways in into the ditches, and sneaking through the reeds and farm crops all the time. Not sure if its as bad today (post-PDJT) but I suspect its the same.

Interesting. Just this morning, on this site was an article which stated that Kelly, has persuaded our President a wall is unnecessary. All we needed was a fence, picket or otherwise. FAKE NEWS strikes again

So ... when, exactly, are these wall-design competitions to be staged? “This summer”??? WHEN “this summer”? By your own words, they have less than two months left and they haven’t even started.

When I was young, I illegally crossed a few times. Rather than wait in line in San Ysidro, just went right through a giant gaping hole in the fence with groups of mexicans. I also took a diversion during a 4 wheel trip in Arizona. There was a list of rules a mile long, so we had to violate every one of them, one of which was not to cross the border. Well, we found tracks leading straight south leading to a well used road. While hanging out at the border several trucks full and of dozens of mexicans drove right up and crossed. We said f it, and drove to puerto penasco for the night. We returned on the same road the next day and continued our journey.

Especially in California. A huge part of the cost of doing anything in California is paying for years of environmental impact studies.

That’s funny (and sad at the same time). I never even thought about the idea of a US citizen crossing illegally back into the US. Would that be illegal? I think if you got caught going into Mexico by Mexican authorities, it might be unpleasant.

TJ would have been late 80s. I cant remember the exact date of driving a car through in Arizona, I cant remember if it was pre or post 9/11, but odds good it was after 9/11
