The threat of confrontation mounted in Venezuela as the president, Nicolás Maduro, installed a controversial new assembly despite overwhelming international condemnation and a planned opposition protest to block it.

The 545-member constituent assembly was inaugurated on Friday, five days after it was elected in a vote that has been dogged by allegations of fraud and vote-rigging.

The new body is made up entirely of pro-government loyalists after the opposition boycotted the vote as unconstitutional.

In its opening session, the assembly elected Venezuela’s former foreign minister Delcy Rodríguez as its president, and the country’s former vice-president Aristobulo Isturiz as its first vice-president.

Meanwhile, the Vatican became the latest of dozens of states to reject the new assembly, which it said “create[s] a climate of tension and conflict” in the overwhelmingly Catholic country.

Okay, so why doesn't the Vatican EXCOMMUNICATE Maduro and his fellow Chavistas taking part in this sham? They couldn't excommunicate Fidel Castro and his fellow Communists because they already declared themselves out of the church but in Venezuela even most Chavistas still declare themselves as Catholics.

This is a theme from 100 years ago; who fears excommunication anymore? Most of Latin American hasn’t been catholic in decades.
