I have always heard the word “crying” used inclusively to encompass any type of complaint, as in “crying and moaning” etc.

I'm convinced that Trump does do these things purposely. I haven't yet figured out whether everything he does is so purposeful or whether the pattern you have observed is designed to obscure those times when he makes real errors.
Either way, he is making his enemies look very foolish. I think some smarter Democrats are starting to catch on but most of the liberal media is clueless.

Agree with your analysis. Trump does make the occasional error. But with his style being to yank the MSM’s chain at every turn, it gets harder and harder to convince people the error wasn’t planned.
Add to all this the fact that Trump’s supporters instantly turn his errors into wildly popular memes, and the MSM struggles to figure out if they’re coming or going. If Trump didn’t plan covfefe, he should have. It’s legendary.
