Good advice, if a bit long-winded. Short version: your life is your own, make the best of it.
I grew up in the South and West Texas and accepted each and every stereotype of racism. If you asked me if I was racist I would have said no and if put on a lie detector would have passed. That is just the way it was and I accepted this stupidity in my youth. As an adult I worked every continent in the world with the exception of Antarctica. In my travels I realized that I had been lied to as a youth. My prejudices vanished.
My ex boss (I am retired now) was a black man from Mississippi. He is a pharmacist as I. He came from a good stable family as I. He did suffer the racism in the sixties. He did not let this hold him back. He went to school and educated himself and exceeded his fathers dreams.
He was a damn good boss and my dear friend. I had conversations with him about racism in the South. He has no bitterness but understood what he had to do to become successful in life. The bars to his success no longer exist. It is time for us all to get over it.
ps
I am a white boy married to a wonderful brown Mexican. In my youth in West Texas this would have totally unacceptable. Today in Texas this is totally normal. My wonderful governor of Texas is also married to a lovely Mexican lady.
Viva Texas!
