Sadly, Captain McVeigh, the skipper of the Indianapolis eventually committed suicide.
It must be recalled that the skipper of the Japanese sub which sank Indianapolis testified that the visibility was so good that a zig zag maneuver would not have saved Indianapolis. Many observers of the proceedings saw Captain McVeigh’s court martial as forced by the Admiral Ernest King’s demand for a scalp, the verdict predetermined and the facts be damned.
