With the Fitzgerald there were some bizarre direction changes just prior to collision. Perhaps there was some miscalculation during ‘the chase’. I have no idea if this is true. Just a layman’s speculation on my part. But the fact that both collisions occurred in a ‘hot spot’ of the world makes me wonder if both collisions were specifically related to the circumstances of their mission, which would make it likely that not all of the facts are going to be shared with the general public.

The only bizarre direction change was by the USS Fitzgerald, which was to the port of ACX Crystal. Despite this, Fitzgerald made a 100 turn toward Crystal's port light (There's a reason port lights are red), crossing the bow of Crystal.

All the direction changes made by Crystal were after the 1;30 collision.
