If nothing else, the watchstanders should have *seen* the freighter or tanker they hit (because they’re still required to keep watch with the Mk1 Eyeball) well in advance due to running lights even if all their electronics had failed or were spoofed.

Please, tell me again how you would spoof someone’s eyes from not seeing a giant, clearly marked merchant ship? That’s like saying you didn’t see the football stadium you drove your car into.

I believe it was the other way around, the tanker was the one that hit the Navy ship.

My son serves on a DDG. I will suggest he arranges for a voluntary secondary watch as a back up to the primary watch. 4 eyes are better than 2! Standing an extra watch every week would be better than drowning in your rack.

The navy ship was hit close to the stern. That is, the ship almost made it. Had it been traveling faster or the container vessel been a mite slower, the navy vessel would have been clear.

My take is the navy vessel misjudged the speeds of both vessels and didn’t make it in time
