Did u know that nail polish can make Matches water proof, and crayons make great fire starters.

I heard about the nail polish (or wax/parrafin) but wouldn't have thought of it. I made a mental note to research when I have time how to start a fire with flint. I do keep some safety matches and a candle handy because we have had more power outages in recent years. Old matchbooks lose their ability to strike or something. Safety matches will catch on a rough surface (or the box but I keep that put up because of grandkids, shouldn't really have just a few handy for that reason).

So you have my curiosity aroused by crayons and I'll have to look into that.

I did learn how to start a fire with kindling twigs and newspaper, for both charcoal and wood in the fireplace and outdoors. It would hurt my pride to use charcoal starter and I hate the smell of it even if it burns off.

But I don't know how to deal with wet wood. Alamazan Kitchen uses "wolf" fur and went and shaved some fur off their wooly dog. It worked for them. But if you are lost, you aren't likely to find any wolf or dog fur that you'd want to harvest anyway.
