The cost of premiums for plans sold on the states health exchange will soar for 2018, adding to questions about the stability and affordability of the health insurance program known as Obamacare.
State regulators announced Tuesday that they have approved average rate increases of just over 23 percent to nearly 50 percent, depending on the plan and carrier, increases that surely will burden consumers who get no government subsidies but also potentially still leave insurers in the red.
Rates for individual plans have gone up well over 100 percent in 4 years, said Chet Burrell, president and CEO of the states dominant insurer, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Its the worst of all worlds now with very high premiums and at the same time carrier losses continue.
The two insurers that continue to offer coverage on the exchange CareFirst and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States have told the Maryland Insurance Administration that they have lost a combined $447 million since policies began selling under the Affordable Care Act in 2014.

Congress and every Fed.gov employee not presently subject to Obamacare MUST be made subject to all its rules.
good
Amazing, the writing is in the wall, yet the government continues toward the cliff, pedal to the metal with sheer abandon and insanity. Stop this fools!!!
Since this is a nationwide problem, I am just wondering what the end game is going to look like. Will everyone end up going to the ER just like the illegals and claim they are indigent? Everyone is paying through the nose and getting no coverage, so it follows “just where is all the money going?” I know it’s a rhetorical question, but there needs to be a real answer.
They want the collapse. They then push single-payer with Hillary Clinton leading the charge. The media would circle-jerk themselves to death supporting that witch.
Love it. The Thing is burning and Maryland bought it. Live with the cooking, lie in the bed you made.
Blue states are dying on the vine they poisened with this scheme for killing American healthcare.
THAT is probably true and, if so, the Republicans will have nudged it into being and happy enough to support it.
Ryan comes to mind. The elite will always have the best of healthcare.
>> Just wait ‘em out ....
Taxes, death, and now health insurance premiums...
I’m in NY, and we’re once again losing our health insurance provider. Despite the insane costs, deductibles, and loss of services, I’ll be forced to seek out yet another provider since the ACA terminated my contract with HIP. We first enrolled with Emblem which was a complete dysfunctional nightmare. Then we went to Health Republic which was okay. After NYS shut it down, we went with ConnectCare which is/was by far the best post-ACA, but Northwell is shutting it down. Needless to say, the process is quite stressful.
Given the cowardly Republican’s reluctance to change anything, the one thing I’d ask for, besides the absolute termination of Obamacare, is the “right” to buy a catastrophic plan. As we’re “too old,” we’re forced to fund the Democrat’s rigged health insurance system. I guess my 3rd choice would require Congress to buy Obamacare without any taxpayer subsidies.
If McConnell and the rest of the big government Republicans are too scared to repeal it, let it crash and burn on its own.
Had there not been a subsidy for fed employees, the gov. would have felt the brunt of what they inflicted upon Americans.
Hmmmmm ...
[[as state approves rates]]
Look for those same words as states keep raising, raising raising prices as they grab more and more $$ from folks to pay for this boondoggle- it’s like climate change- once they have their hooks in- they will just keep raising prices-
My son’s insurance started at $134 per month, pre-Obamacare. With Obamacare, the rates have gone up and up... now at $467 per month, and apparently still climbing. We pay out-of-pocket for every doctor visit, since the insurance actually does not cover anything.
I have to wonder if it is worth having insurance at all. With the high deductible, we’d be in the hole before any catastrophic event was actually covered.
We have lots of a$$holes to thank for 0bamascam. First we cant start with 0bama and his lap dogs, then Nancy Pelosi, all Democrats and finally the chicken $hit congress currently in office.
I live and work in Pennsylvania. I pay $467 every 2 weeks to insure myself, my wife and one child. My employer pays another $510 for my crappy coverage.
The total amount is more than $25,000 every year.
My deductible is at $3600 which means I have to pay out of pocket on the first $3600 of healthcare payments.
It is insane. I have to pay this enormous amount for what is really the equivalent to catastrophic insurance, which I already have with my auto insurance.
There is talk here in Maryland the NOT so “Free State” by the forever Dem legislature to force ALL Marylanders to buy some form of health insurance. )-:
The end game is single payer socialized medicine, and we’re getting there faster than expected.
Excellent point.
And lookit those red states....they control the oil, the natural gas, food and water sources,.....etc etc etc.
You are so correct!
The world can see for themselves the Grand Experiment of America at work, in just the difference between the Blue and the Red.
Volumes could be written on who has brought America to her knees and needy today, and who stands her upright, free and prosperous.
It’s God Awesome, Lizzy!
