ATLANTA - Black gay men are contracting HIV in Atlanta in epidemic proportions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which stated in 2016 that one in two black men would contract the disease.
Christian Dacus is a youth HIV policy advisor with Georgia Equality. He said personally, the spike in the number of HIV cases for gay black men in Atlanta is not surprising to him because of the stigma.
“It's been spun in such a negative way that HIV is a punishment for your sins,” Dacus said.
Dacus cited non-acceptance from religion and family, and living a life of hiding a secret as the reason why -- despite education and advocacy efforts among gay black men in Atlanta -- numbers are not declining.
“When you're hiding something, you're less prone to go out be more careful, if you will,” Dacus said.

That's some sort of logic that I just don't understand. If I knew that I was hiding something, and I was completely alone in that knowledge and dependent only upon myself as a result, I would tend to go the other way: I would be more careful and extra sensitive to what is going on around me.
But, hey, who am I to bring up logical ...
This reasoning reminds me a bit of how we aren’t supposed to talk about Muslim terror. Muslims commit atrocities, but we see people baffled and not knowing what the motivations of the barbarians who commit atrocities are.
In the case of AIDS, we see people baffled at the spread of AIDS in the gay community, in this case the black gay community. They are baffled as to how AIDS is being spread and how AIDS cases are growing.
It’s clear to many of us why AIDS is spreading, but these allegedly well educated health care workers don’t understand it?

Whattttt? I certainly don't see how he's connecting those dots or how "hiding" something makes you less prone to be more careful. I would think just the opposite. From the whole article I don't see how the "stigma" of HIV could cause an increase in HIV cases.
