A major characteristic of methane gas - it is much lighter than other components of the atmosphere, with a molecular weight very nearly the same as water vapor.
Water vapor can rise very high in the atmosphere, at which point it undergoes a transformation, becoming microscopic ice crystals, which are inherently HEAVIER than most of the other constituents of the atmosphere, and they slowly sink back to the surface, to fall again as rain or snow.
Methane does not undergo a similar transformation, but continues to rise higher and higher in the atmosphere, eventually escaping to outer space. But the vast majority of methane that is emitted from various sources undergoes oxidation in an oxygen-rich atmosphere, forming water molecules and carbon dioxide, and both products continue to cycle in the atmosphere. Sunlight alone provide enough energy to cause the oxidation of the methane, energy that degrades into heat. But the heat is dispersed by the action of the water molecules formed, which then carry the heat up in to the upper atmosphere, where it radiates off into outer space, and repeats the formation of microscopic ice crystals and precipitates as either snow or rain. There is never a runaway accumulation of heat, and therefore no source of global warming from either the carbon dioxide OR released methane.
