Mario Batali doesn’t think $15 minimum wage is good for restaurants or foodies

Published September 15, 2017

Celebrity chef Mario Batali isn’t convinced that a minimum wage of $15 will be good for the restaurant industry.

Speaking at a Recode’s Code Commerce event on Wednesday, Batali admitted that raising servers’ wages to $15 per hour is “a fascinating way of looking at raising quality of life," but doesn’t personally feel it’s sustainable for the owners of smaller restaurants, reports Buzzfeed.

There’s no question that raising minimum wage is a faster way to get people more money very quickly,” said Batali in response to an audience member’s question on the subject. “I think … the result of that, will be that quite quickly, the prices in restaurants who … are supported and basically run by people who [make] minimum wage will raise their prices.”

“It’s not without cost that we [raise wages]. That’s all I’m saying,” he said.

There is a big union associated with this business. Wasn’t Herman Cain associated somehow?

Anyone who thinks that a $15 min wage will work in the restaurant industry is a damn fool. It will destroy restaurants. People can’t afford to eat at restaurants now, just wait until they have to hike their food prices by 30% and see what happens. They won’t be able to sell all their rotting food that no one will pay for and will quickly go under.

Minimum wage is a tax. It is government forcing people to pay for something. I think it is unconstitutional.

This is the piece of human garage that had to repay $5 million back to employees because he skimmed their tips.

The hubris of this POS.

Dear Mario, Obama the Great approves of that “living wage”. Didn't you get the Memo?

“Mario Batali, the guy who refused Republicans service during the NYC GOP convention.”

Same for his bald headed “Chew” co-host Michael Simon for Trump at the RNC 2016 Cleveland Convention. Simon tries to come across as a middle class guy. But he is just another socialist POS.

This is the guy that REFUSED to cater a Republican venue...and was also SUED for MILLIONS OF DOLLARS that he skimmed off of his Wait Staff’s TIPS? (And probably didn’t REPORT to the IRS?)

Yeah. I’m going to side with him.

*SNORT*

You are exactly right! That will be the end of the foodie restaurant craze and along with that, the celebrity chefs like this Mario Battalli jerk! I predict, however, that companies like Blue Apron will reap the windfall from foodies who still want gourmet cooking but will have to resort to cooking it themselves.

I love Food Network. Is it just another liberally infested show behind the scenes? I know Paula Dean was pushed out and yet I have never heard any political BS from the stars of the prime time shows.

All these lower end restaurant jobs will be automated. No need for chefs, waiters, and cashiers. High-end restaurants will still have humans.

My family has been in the restaurant biz their whole lives and I worked in them too as a kid. The margins on food is so tiny that you have to sell tons of food to have a successful restaurant. The prices have to be set in just the right "sweet spot" so as to be able to move your inventory and still make a profit. If small restaurants are forced to pay such high labor then they will have to raise prices too keep them afloat. There's no alternative to that except maybe automation.

It's really an already dying business model that they operate under and now greedy liberals want to drive the final nails into the coffin.

Liberals NEVER have an economic idea that isn't destined to be a complete and utter failure.

Let them have the raise. But don’t leave a tip. Diners might even save a few cents in the process. The waitresses will soon be begging for the old lower wages and the old lower prices.
