WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his fight with the National Football League on Tuesday, calling on the popular league to ban players from kneeling in protest at games while the U.S. national anthem is played.
"The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can't kneel during our National Anthem!" Trump wrote on Twitter, fuelling his war of words with the multibillion-dollar NFL in his fifth straight day of public comments on the issue.
Representatives for the league and its players union could not be reached immediately for comment.
Trump earlier Tuesday praised two NFL teams that had largely steered clear of the controversy Monday night. The Arizona Cardinals linked arms and stood for the playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" along with the Dallas Cowboys, who knelt before the song.

Trump knows that he can’t lose on this one.
Gotta love Trump. He stays on the attack.
Nope, thats government and socialism. There is already NFL rules that govern this behavior. More rules, more gasoline, more protests. Best to run the NFL out of business.
I don’t care about pro sports anyhow, but it might be interesting if this turns into a split within the NFL - those who stand vs. those who kneel.
If one owner wanted to instantly become “America’s Team” all it would take is a public statement right now that any player who fails to stand for the anthem or does any other kind of protest before during or after it will be immediately fired and removed from the game. Zero tolerance.
These players are paid (very well) to act a certain way, just like any employee. Consequences of not doing so are totally up to the owner(s). Sure they may get sued but bid deal, they get sued all the time anyway and get nothing out of it. Here, they can be national heros.
That is NOT the header from the article——it is very misleading.
.
Maybe he’s trying to bring back the USFL? Or, could this be his revenge on the nfl for squashing the USFL??
“Nope, thats government and socialism. There is already NFL rules that govern this behavior. More rules, more gasoline, more protests. Best to run the NFL out of business.”
That is what this will do, and you know what? I. Don’t. Care.
Hey Don! I kicked the National Felons League to the curb last year, when they started this crap. I’ll not likely let them back in ...
Same here. The more they kneel the more I won’t watch.
Mr. Trump. Please, please, please come to San Diego and attack the NFL in front of huge crowd of rabid NFL hating ex-Charger fans.
At this point I am wondering if you shouldn’t just treat them like you would a defiant child and say the opposite of what you want them to do. “You must kneel before the anthem etc etc etc...”
"The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can't kneel during our National Anthem!"
If the NFL can make meticulously detailed rules about what players can wear on the field and how they can celebrate touchdowns in the end zone, then surely the NFL can require them to do something so simple and inoffensive as standing respectfully during the national anthem.
“The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can’t kneel during our National Anthem!”
Only problem is they will come up with something new to piss us off and advance their agenda of the end of the USA as we know it.
And Bennett should be hit with a conduct penalty for raising his Black Power fist after tackles.
Great minds thinking!
I'm not trying to make the NFL do one thing or another. They can do as they please ... but doing so has consequences. They act like a bunch of anti-American racist idiots (it's not an act), I throw them out of my life.
More properly worded should be that players will stand for anthem.
