As the controversy over athletes boycotting the National Anthem continues, I would like to share some historical perspective.
The Star-Spangled Banner became part of our sports traditions for a good reason: It brought people together in times of grave national turmoil. For this reason alone, it is a tradition worth respecting.
According to MLB.com, The Star-Spangled Banner was first performed at a baseball game on May 15, 1862. Given baseballs lengthy history in America, this is likely the first time it was played at a major U.S. sporting event.
The timing was significant. In 1862, the nation was embroiled in the Civil War. America was as divided as it had ever been. People were fighting and lives were being lost in battle. It was a dark time for our still young country.

That is the question, will we have more loyalty to the NFL or to America.

Myself: I boycott all professional sports, and refuse invitations to homes where I know they have non-stop worship at the HD Altar to same.
Newt is an historian. He is also a pundit who is paying attention to trends
All due respect, the Anthem honors the Flag, regardless of how and where it has been played.
On any military base at retreat every day the Anthem is played as the Flag is lowered.
All outside activity must stop. Driving, walking whatever. Stops. Anyone on foot faces the Flag. Hand over heart or salute with attention
And the Flag is not the military’s Flag. It is the Nation’s Flag. Anyone disrespecting it disrespects the country.
There’s no getting around that as Newt tries to say here

Are you sure? I’m pretty sure when I was growing up, they played Taps.
You very much stopped your car, got out, and faced the parade field / flag pole, even as a civvy dependent.
Of course I’m sure.
Taps is at night. Retreat is end of workday
The further from the fighting the bigger the show.

The National Anthem is played at 0800 as the flag is raised.
Know little about military bases but do know in the DFW area the tee vee stations began and ended each and every day with OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM. While being sung, an image would be shown of our AF Pilots in flight as a unit, a billowing flag being flown, and other similar images. That is but one free speech which has been silenced. Was this done in other areas across the US? Miss that part of our history AND the Indian in full head-dress test pattern. Color bars are so bland and nondescript.
