Don't worry. In a few years refering to people with epicanthic folds by their eyes as Asian will be just as racist and a new term will be the official term to use. Maybe after a few roations it will become "people of the Orient" like "colored people" became "people of color" for the term of the year for blacks.

Asia is just too big of continent with too many cultures to use Asian as a code word for one section of it. Even Orwell had to split Eurasia from Eastasia (which we have always been at war with).

Confusion upon confusion - you appear to be using the term ‘Middle Easterner’ to include people deriving from the Indian sub-continent. I gather this has been an increasing trend in US colloquial usage in recent years, whereas here in Britain the Middle East is never considered as extending any further Eastward than Iran. Conversely we would never use ‘Asian’ to describe people from the (British-sense) Middle East, who are simply described as ‘Middle Eastern’. And contrary to the widespread assumption on FR, the British usage ‘Asian’ doesn’t necessarily imply ‘Muslim’ - it includes Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and indeed anybody deriving from the Indian sub-continent.

In my youth the term ‘Near East’ was normally used for the countries of the Levant: but the Near East has long since vanished from general usage - as has the Levant, for that matter.

No, I actually did not mention India or Pakistan. The Middle East generally includes Saudi Arabia, Syria, Libya... etc. It does *not* include India or Pakistan.

I know that India and Pakistan are on the southern part of the Eurasian continent, but typically, those are different ethnicities than the Middle East or Asia. India has several religions, plus the caste system; Pakistan seems to have a lot of Muslims. If you look at racial subgroups, the Pakistanis and Indians have more in common with each other than they do with European Caucasians, although all are Caucasians.

I think the British usage of "Asian" to mean anyone from east of Russia is highly confusing, even though that part of the continent is classified as Asia.

Actually, I did visit North Korea briefly. If you take a DMZ tour that includes the Joint Security Area, you can enter a UN building that straddles the border. And in that building, you can cross over and visit North Korea. Okay, so I didn't see much but the inside of a building, and whatever is visible through the dirty windows there...

I highly recommend the DMZ tour, if you ever get a chance to visit Seoul. :)

How does British media discern between the Asian Muslims of Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc. from the Hindus, Buddhists, etc. of the other Asian countries?

It seems that more precise information would be a good thing in reporting news and events. Lumping all “Asians” in a category largely peopled by a particular sub-category is a disservice to the readers/viewers/listeners, is it not? It’s also a disservice to the “Asians” that aren’t part of the problem.

It’s just what mooselimbs do.

“If a woman gets raped walking in public alone, then she, herself is at fault. She is only seducing men by her presence.” Saudi Arabia professor

When asked why they gangraped a victim, the perp said, “..She was unveiled, a whore and was asking for it.”

“All white women are only good for one thing,” he shouted. “For men like me to f*** and use like trash. That’s all women like you are worth.”

“Christian Girls are only Meant for One Thing, the Pleasure of Muslim Men”

“Australia’s Halal Chief Says White Women Need To Be Fertilized By Muslim Men”

“there was “a major problem in particular communities” of men viewing young white girls as “trash regarded as available for sex”.”

“Christian girls are considered goods to be damaged at leisure. Abusing them is a right. According to the community’s mentality it is not even a crime. Muslims regard them as spoils of war.” — Local residents, Pakistan.

“The men treated me like an animal, telling me I was a worthless Christian.... They said Christian women are all whores and they would come back and repeat their debauchery if I ever told anyone.”

“Religious minority women under IS [Islamic State] control are often repeatedly sold from jihadi to jihadi. Once militants get tired of raping and abusing one particular girl, they usually sell them off to one of their militant buddies so they can rape and abuse them at their own pleasure.” — Samuel Smith, The Christian Post.

“The book “Easy Meat: Inside Britain’s Grooming Gang Scandal,” noted Muslims make up 5 percent of the population of the U.K. but account for 90 percent of “grooming gang” convictions.”

“Europe’s governments may be desperate to cover it up but Cologne proves that many Muslim men have NO respect for white women… White women are nothing to some Islamic and Arabic men. It’s the reason our girls were abused in Rochdale and Oxford and the reason white German women were raped in Cologne.” [The Telegraph article]

I remember there's a scene in Bend It Like Beckham where an Indian Hindu girl is called a "Paki" and she attacks in rage. I realize now that she wasn't angry at being called a racist name. She was angry at being mistaken for someone from a profoundly twisted culture.

My daughter had s couple of Indian-American girlfriends when she was in high school. I got to know a couple of the families and there were wonderful people, thoroughly Americanized. In fact one time I dropped the girls off at one of the Indian-American girls’s house. This girls had apparently forgotten to so some chores, hadn’t informed her mother where she was and was late getting home. You know typical teenage clueless behavior stuff. However the mother was quite pissed. So I got to watch and hear some parenting Bollywood style! The thing I remember most is what the Indian-American mom in a Shiva-like “Lady of Destruction” mode yell at her daughter - You going to act like a human being or are you going to act like a Muslim ?”

No they don’t like Muslims!

The Indian author (But Jamaica born!) V.S. Naipul says that the Muslim invasions of India were so destructive that parts of India still haven’t recovered.

Mutual misunderstanding there - I assumed that your original post referred to Pakistani etc Muslims as ‘Middle Easterners, since few British Muslims come from the Middle East - most are from Pakistan, Bangladesh and to a lesser extent India.

The origin of the British ‘Asian’ usage dates from the days of the British Raj, when the only people from the continent of Asia seen in any numbers in Britain were Indian. ‘Asian’ wasn’t then - and isn’t now - used for the Far East of the continent.

I see from your profile that you are British.

In American usage, the term "Asian" refers to people of a certain racial type, who are chiefly from eastern Asian countries: China, Japan, Mongolia, Philippines, etc. They also used to be called "Oriental" which somehow has become racist.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and a couple of other countries are located on the Indian subcontinent. Most Americans, if asked to name countries of Asia, would be unlikely to mention any countries that are on the Indian subcontinent because we don't typically think of them as being part of Asia.

The Middle East stretches across North Africa and Eurasia, based on the fact that the countries in this region are typically Muslim.

As I think about it, I think American geography is based more on similarity of ethnicity than on physical landmasses. It seems, from my viewpoint as an outside observer, that British geography is based more on the physical location than on a primary ethnic characteristic of people living in the area.

I suppose you found that safe but was noting that travel in NK has ended horribly for many innocent souls.

Visiting the DMZ and stepping over the border for a few minutes within a UN building is, I am sure, infinitely safer than going on a tour of North Korea. It is not completely without risk.

When you take that tour, you get a briefing before going to the UN area. In that briefing, they tell you how many attempts per year North Korea has made to infiltrate South Korea across the DMZ. It used to be over 500 attempts, but that has dropped off to less than 300 in the last couple of years. You are also warned that North Koreans could attack--they are unpredictable, and have been known to attack and kill people working in the DMZ. You have to sign a waiver to indicate that you understand the risk of going on the tour.

I am certain that the North Koreans photograph every visitor to the UN area. On the North Korea side, there is a huge ugly grey building, with devices attached on the roof and on the front. I am sure that at least a few of those are cameras. This is not my picture, but I have several similar:

Panmunjom

There are other pictures on the internet of people standing next to the Korean Soldier who guards the door that opens out into North Korea. I had my picture taken like that, too. I do not want to post pictures of random people here, though, since I do not have their permission to post their pictures.

South Korea used to let people go to North Korea to visit relatives. They stopped doing that about 3 years ago when a woman was walking on the beach and was shot to death. The North Koreans claimed that she was in a restricted area. Whatever. The South Korean government has deemed such visits too dangerous to continue. North Korea never reciprocated by allowing people to visit South Korea.

I have a lot of respect and sympathy for the people of South Korea. They live with the danger daily, right over the north border. It is not very far away from Seoul at all.
