He knew it was a suicide event going in. Firing automatic weapons and murdering dozens of people. He had the pistol there to finish himself off.
So if he’s going for body count, why use the guns?
Even targeting that event, a plane would have killed more people that the rifles.

A small personal plane? Doubt it. First of all most people would see it coming and start running. Those small personal planes are not exactly fast so its not as if a jet would be hitting the ground. The small plane would have one shot at killing someone and that’s it where that kind of arsenal shooting at 20K gathered behind fencing? Yea much better using automatic weapons.
CAVEAT: The planes he owns are actual large airliners like a 747 or Airbus A340 etc. Doubt that, though.
