You’re right, and looks like a blood spatter trail between the body and the weapon
I totally can't look at the photo while at work, but... was he maybe standing when he offed himself? Splattered his evil brain out the back and then crumpled... gun fell wherever it wound up. Possible?
Also possible re: the gun position... when they came into the room, even though he sure may have looked like a goner, it'd be best to move any weapons away from his reach. Don't know if that makes sense, since I didn't look at the photo yet.
