I think the Basques still do not have independence. Countries are sovereign and people don’t just get to break off a piece and start their own country.

Seems like it has it’s roots way way back in the early 1900s....
But it seems like Catalonia is sick of being the tax livestock of the rest of Spain and the refugees crisis created by Merkel and the EU isn;t helping matters much either.
Spain is sovereign.
Two problems really stick out:
There was no referendum of the whole country.

The situation is very unfortunate.
My hope is that the people in Catalunya decide that they are unwilling to kill thousands in order to separate from the more conservative Spanish government that they loathe. The Soviet sponsored Catalan communists showed they were serious by murdering priests and raping nuns during the Spanish Civil War, in which 600,000 died. There will be no independence if they are not serious about independence.
