After a brief pause in tropical activity, another system formed Wednesday in the Caribbean and will likely become Tropical Storm Nate, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Depression 16 is located about 210 miles south-southeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the border of Nicaragua and Honduras, the weather service said in its 11 a.m. ET advisory.

The system has sustained winds of about 35 mph, moving northwest at 7 mph, and "is expected to become a tropical storm later today or tonight."

NOAA predicts most active hurricane season since 2010

"On the forecast track, the depression should be nearing the coast of Nicaragua early Thursday, move across northeastern Nicaragua and eastern Honduras late Thursday, and emerge into the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Friday," the NHC said.

Any possible impact from the storm on the United States is not yet clear, but the NHC's forecast cone shows it may approach the eastern Gulf Coast near the Florida panhandle as a hurricane by Sunday.

After all of the storms this season, I hardly think this is a matter to joke about.

If you are along the coast and inside the cone, you should be preparing.

Something’s coming. In north central Florida, we’ve had high winds and overcast skies for days, now. Most unusual weather.

Things got calm once Irma blew through, but it didn’t last long.

Not that long ago that we didn't even know they were coming.

Yes, in the pre-satellite days we mostly relied on a telephone/telegraph/radio network to report barometric readings from the Caribbean islands and ships sailing in that area.

And that was just fine with me.

It worked well enough. I remember watching the old aneroid barometer on the wall at my parents’ house during Camille, as that needle slowly wound itself all the way to the “Stormy” end of the scale.

TD 16 developing more slowly than the original forecast with Nicaragua and Honduras expecting torrential rain and landfall today. The system is currently moving NW at 7 mph.

The system could be near hurricane intensity when it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula late Friday, bringing direct impacts from wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall, and a hurricane watch is in effect for a portion of this area.

In addition to that, I got up this morning and ran the GFS model on Nate.

At hour 168 after going inland in the gulf and going up to Kansas, it has worked its way down to me in the Phoenix Valley.

I don’t have Hurricane Shutters and drilling into all this beige stucco is going to damage it. Dang.

Unless there is something to weaken this system, it has potential.

Harvey went from Depression to Hurricane very quickly.

I pray it does not hit Texas (and does not appear headed that way).

It bears watching. Friday night there should be some firm forecasts in place...
