It would have taken forever to run down the back stairs 32 floors, out the back, across the street and find his car that the valet parked. And remember to have a second set of keys. Then, in all the chaos, plow his way through emergency vehicles and people back around and blocks over to the tanks and then set it off with no one seeing him. And somehow get away before it blew.
Well then, he must have realized that his odds of escape were slim. Maybe he was thinking he could stroll down to the casino and lose himself in the crowd.
More likely, he knew it was a suicide mission.
