It’s known he had (2-3??) million dollars investment properties at one time. They haven’t announced what his current finances were.

My unfounded wild guess is deteriorating health/relationship/finances may have combined with family history of mental illness to make trouble.

It doesn’t look like he had income other than the investment properties and sometimes gambling habits can turn from controlled to uncontrolled.
