Trump suggests challenging TV network licenses over 'fake news'

President Donald Trump suggested challenging licenses for NBC and other broadcast news networks on Wednesday, a salvo that followed reports his own secretary of state had called him a “moron” after a discussion of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

“With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!” Trump, a Republican, wrote in a post on Twitter.

Trump on Saturday also suggested that he should get “equal time” because late-night television hosts are “dealing with the Democrats for their very ‘unfunny’” material that was “anti-Trump.”

The FCC’s equal time rules apply in limited cases to air time for political candidates and not to criticism of elected leaders.

Trump may have been referring to the “Fairness Doctrine” that was designed to ensure broadcasters present opposing viewpoints about public issues. Republican President Ronald Reagan’s administration eliminated it in 1987.

I wonder if President Trump can bring back the "Fairness Doctrine" that President Reagan eliminated.

Wouldn't it force the networks to give an equal amount of time to the opposing opinion the networks generally have which is mostly anti-Trump?

No. Doesn't work. If Trump wants to get out real news, he should buy one of the networks, or create his own.

The networks have been providing social engineering via fake news since the 60’s. It is ingrained into the “news” culture and often disguised as investigative reporting.

The "Fairness Doctrine" is a slippery slope. Would demand equal time on TV and talk radio. Commies wouldn't have the ad revenue, but would be there by law. As I understand it, would affect talk radio the most but I'm no expert on it.

Overall, I got the impression a very bad idea for conservatives. Plus, legislating time, who decides in the future, "eliminate right wing hate radio, blah, blah".

Anyone here have an in depth knowledge of the Fairness Doctrine?

In fact, any news outlet that broadcasts what it KNOWS—or SHOULD KNOW—to be false and untrue should lose its license.

This little authoritarian streak is the reason I’ve never fully trusted Trump.

Americans shouldn’t have to put up with these liars and propagandists. They’ve ruined journalism and have turned Americans against each other with their vile slanders.

Enough is quite enough of this crap.

The anchorette of a Hearst-owned station in Des Moines has called Bretbart News a “white nationalist” site.

I have face to face berated a couple of their employees and an exec. Document their outrages and confront them.

Domestic propaganda was banned in the United States until the Obama administration. There’s one source of the constant lying BS. Reinstate the ban.

Generally I’d prefer the government not regulate the content of speech. This won’t work out well for conservatives.

The media seem to be immune from Congressional investigations and hearings. Other corporations are investigated all of the time (oil companies, tobacco, healthcare, etc.). So why shouldn’t the media be held accountable for their actions?

As Rush stated this morning it is the individual stations that have the broadcast license.

Here’s the Problem.

Their response would be to give air time to the likes of John Cornyn, John McCain, Bill Krystal and George Will.

Who would step right up to the plate and bash some more.

I just know that if he goes after NBC, then when a liberal gets back in the WH, they will go after everything else (Fox).

Good. Slow down the liberals at least with their broadcast lies. They are relentless in lying; that is for certain.
