Trump to end key ACA subsidies, a move that will threaten the law’s marketplaces

President Trump is throwing a bomb into the insurance marketplaces created under the Affordable Care Act, choosing to end critical payments to health insurers that help millions of lower-income Americans afford coverage. The decision follows an executive order on Thursday to allow alternative health plans that skirt the law’s requirements.

The White House confirmed late Thursday that it would halt federal payments for cost-sharing reductions, although a statement did not specify when. According to two people briefed on the decision, the cutoff will be as of November. The subsidies total about $7 billion this year.

Trump has threatened for months to stop the payments, which help eligible consumers afford their deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses, but held off while other administration officials warned him that such a move would cause an implosion of the ACA marketplaces that could be blamed on Republicans.

Health insurers and state regulators have been in a state of high anxiety over the prospect of the marketplaces cratering because of such White House action. The fifth year’s open-enrollment season for consumers to buy coverage through ACA exchanges will open in less than three weeks, and insurers have said that stopping the cost-sharing payments would be the single greatest step the Trump administration could take to harm the marketplaces — and the law.

Ending the payments is grounds for any insurer to back out of its federal contract to sell health plans for 2018.

I can't believe that FReepers are applauding this.

Trump isn't going to be President forever. The minute the Rat wins the WH, this EO will get reversed, if it doesn't get shot down in the courts first.

I want Obamacare repealed legislatively. If not, then all Trump has to do is end the waivers, end the exemptions, and force Congress' staff and the elites to go on Obamacare just like us little people.

Then and only then will they beg for repeal.

You see, We don’t want to buy insurance for other people. We will buy our own. There is no constitutional right the health care much less insurance premiums. You dont get sick an then go suck off of me by buying insurance that DAY!! Screw you. This is a great WIN for self reliance and free enterprise. Each should calculate their net desposable income and then make a list of priorities. I don’t give a crap if you put health insurance on there or not but to force me to buy it for you is COMMUNISM!! HELL NO!!

“I want Obamacare repealed legislatively”

well, naturally. but that hasn’t and won’t happen unless Congress, specifically the GOP, is FORCED to act, and the only force that can cause them to act is for obamacare to collapse. period

With their donations from the insurance companies at risk Congress will find a way to authorize the subsidies... “for the children” LOL!

May even get a good bill, the pressure is on all of Congress.

I understand why the Founders wanted split, head-butting government. What they didn’t realize is that once the scum become established in power, the inherent sluggishness keeps them there. Of course, professional politicians were not foreseen back then. What we need, and will never get, is congressional term limits. Hey Reps, the presidency is term limited. Why aren’t you?

IMO it’s the consolidated national media that is the source of the problem you address.
The Founders never imagined that such a unified movement to distort reportage from DC would arise- because they never imagined TV.

People hear of politicians and events in DC as this media describes them. Politicians that make the media happy (IE: help their profits) have cheap, easy re-elections.

This whole dam thing is unconstitutional. They wrote the thing in the senate and DEEMED it passed in the house.

I wish people would remember that. It NEVER got reconciled in both chambers so it was simply deemed as passed.

I agree. Trump tried to urge them to act. Even I never thought he would do this. Now he played the Trump card - this is like dropping a nuke on NK. EVERYONE in congress should have no doubts, Trump will use every tool in his box to get his agenda passed. ACA, DACA ... this sends a HUGE signal - Trump is going to Go Big ...

just about any other republican would of played the democrat game scared that they would get the blame. the truth is that the democrats will get the blame though the news media will try and convince the public that they are to blame the republicans...sad fact is that if the republicans tried to do anything to relieve the pain of Obama care failing we would be blamed for causing the failure.
