Root Cause: Approx 80% of black households are single parent (moms only) households. #1 predictor of poverty
Exactly. Using median household data is a weaselly way to avoid dealing with individual differences between cultural groups. Too many African American households have, at most, one wage earner. A lot have none. Compared to other groups where two parents live together and earn wages, plus children often have part-time jobs, the single parent heavy black culture comes out looking pretty pitiful. But comparing individual wages usually shows that black workers out earn workers of other races with comparable education and work history. So, contrary to the author’s attribution of the problem to discrimination, the culprit is broken families and disdain for “white values” of hard work, delayed gratification and personal responsibility. Black and poverty are corollaries rather than causation factors.
