KIRKUK, Iraq (AP) - The Latest on Iraq, where federal forces have attacked the Kurdish-held city of Kirkuk (all times local): 2:30 p.m.
A spokesman for Iraq's state-sanctioned militias says they have "achieved all our goals" in retaking areas from Kurdish forces in and around the disputed northern city of Kirkuk.
Ahmed al-Assadi says federal forces came under fire from "some rebels" after launching the operation early Monday and returned fire.
He says federal forces have been deployed in the area of the K-1 military base, the Kirkuk airport and a number of oil fields and installations. But he says the state-backed militias, known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, have not entered the city center.
Associated Press reporters earlier saw militiamen at posts in western Kirkuk.
Kurdish forces seized control of Kirkuk in the summer of 2014, when Islamic State militants swept across northern Iraq and the country's armed forces crumbled. The Kurds claim Kirkuk, even though it is outside their autonomous region.
The central government has long demanded the Kurds withdraw, and appears to have decided to act in the wake of last month's Kurdish vote for independence, which was rejected as unconstitutional by Baghdad.

IRAQI government forces took control of “vast areas” in the region of Kirkuk, including oilfields west of the city, in the early hours of today, Iraqi state TV said, but the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) disputed the assertions.
The elite, US-trained “Counter Terrorism Service, the 9th armoured division and Federal Police have taken control of vast areas of Kirkuk without confrontations”, it said, and oilfields and Kurdish military positions were captured.
However, a KRG security official denied that Iraqi forces were able to get closer to the city or take territory from the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.
The official told Reuters the oilfields and the air base west of Kirkuk were still under Kurdish control.

Col. Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the coalition in Baghdad, said all American forces in the area were watching the situation, but were out of the fighting. He said force protection measures had been imposed to ensure their safety.

This is what happens when Shia muslims control Baghdad. It is an Iranian protectorate now.
I suspect the US leaned on Erbil and Barzani to fall back instead of totally confront the “state militias”.

Who is commanding the Kurds? I think with Trump’s silence that something bigger is amok. And yes I think the Kurds were wise to withdraw with the terrorist Iranians taking over Iraq. Time to plan with Israel? Thinking about the kurds in Iran? They were basically surrounded, at least Israel has the sea. Their time will come if they acknowledge the One True God of Israel and they are in fact the Medes of the prophecies. God does do things like that. :)
