SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed a trove of new details on the companys plan to colonize Mars.
He discussed technical details about the giant rocket that he says will take passengers to the Red Planet, the road map for getting to its first launch, and insights into SpaceXs broader strategy in an Ask Me Anything forum on Reddit Saturday.
Musk was his typical freewheeling self during the AMA, quoting the cartoon Bob the Builder and responding to a question about spaceship design with the highly technical insight that tails are lame.
He also gamely responded to questions about tangential details of settling Mars, including speculation that settlers might use a compressed version of the Internet. Musk observed that data would take between 3 and 22 minutes to travel between Earth and Mars. So you could Snapchat, I suppose. If thats a thing in the future, he wrote.
More substantively, Musk clarified the scope of SpaceXs ambitions on Mars. Though he has shared images of vast Martian cities in his presentations on Mars colonization, he said SpaceX isnt focused on building those cities itself.
Our goal is get you there and ensure the basic infrastructure for propellant production and survival is in place. A rough analogy is that we are trying to build the equivalent of the transcontinental railway. A vast amount of industry will need to be built on Mars by many other companies and millions of people.

Siberia is cheaper. Warmer, too.

Elon better colonize his manufacturing facility.
Colon ize mars?
What did mars do to deserve Kaepernick?
Try the Moon to prove you can do something besides talk and is this change number 3 for Mars ?
I’m sure this will require billions of dollars in government research funds and grants. All while producing ZERO return to investors and government in the form of profits, dividends or taxes.
His propaganda piece is the “Mars” series on the National Geographic channel.
While the cheerleaders on Earth are celebrating the settlers get to die young.
Great plan. :-(
My plan: Send all Dhimmicrats.
Why Mars?
There is nothing there that we don’t have plenty of here already.
Just to go there and say your’e there?..............
Mars has no magnetic field and no atmosphere comparable to ours.
Cosmic rays and UV bombardment would kill or severely deform any babies conceived or born there, not to mention cancers of all types..........................
As long as Elon gets billions in government handouts who cares?
Siberia is cheaper. Warmer, too.
But the idea is to get an human, self sustaining extra-terrestrial colony.
Pretty expensive, though.
Already being done. There are several private outfits that are working to do commercial travel to the moon as soon as 2019.
This is a very exciting time for space travel. SpaceX has turned commercial spaceflight into a viable thing. Reusable boosters means massive savings over the shuttle program, and heavy lift capabilities are coming.
I thumb my nose at the detractors. We're in for some exciting space news in the next 10 years.
What’s the payback?
What’s the payback?
i.e. ROI
Just like a young Lyndon Larouche... but with money
