Prosecutors allege that Oberhansley broke into the Jeffersonville home of his 46-year-old ex-girlfriend, Tammy Jo Blanton, in September 2014, and that he raped her, stabbed her to death and ate parts of her body. Carmichael ordered the competency evaluations after defense attorneys Brent Westerfeld and Bart Betteau filed a motion in February saying Oberhansley wasn’t able to participate in his own defense or fully understand the court proceedings. “He is suspicious, paranoid, uncommunicative, and agitated,” they wrote, saying there is a “complete breakdown” in communication between them and Oberhansley.

This is a real triumph of the criminal justice system, all around. From a report right after the crime:
“He cut her throat, stabbed her 12 or 14 times in the chest, three times in the forehead and cut her heart out,” explained Hughes.
Oberhansley was paroled in 2012 for killing a different girlfriend and shooting his mother.
He was 17 at the time of the crime living in Utah. The now 33-year-old has developed a lengthy criminal record in Southern Indiana. Earlier this summer police say he strangled a man and led officers on a chase in Jeffersonville.
Clark County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said Oberhansley should have been in jail but a mistake between the court and the prosecutor’s office allowed his bond to be reduced from $25,000 to $5,000.
“Tammy’s the one that went down there and bailed him out and she just probably didn’t know she was signing her own death warrant at the time,” said Hughes.
Put him down like a rabid dog, because that is what he is.
