The European Parliament's president says no one will ever recognize Catalonia as an independent country.

Antonio Tajani says Catalonia's independence referendum was illegal and state of law should be restored. He also spoke against EU mediation, saying the crisis is an internal Spanish issue.

Catalonia's separatist leader on Saturday called on Catalans to peacefully oppose Spain's takeover.

On a previous thread I described my opposition to Catalan independence and got considerable pushback. But the reality is that in today's world a nation cannot exist as an independent entity without international recognition. The US, Canada, Germany, UK and France have already announced they won't recognize Catalan independence. The same is true of Mexico, and the rest of Latin America is following the Mexican lead. No EU country will recognize this either. A bad idea poorly thought through. Let's hope cooler heads prevail and this can be resolved peacefully and with Catalonia remaining part of Spain.

self determination is the ultimate right of any people. The Catalans have every right to self-determination.

Madrid zealously supported Slovenian & Croatian independence in 1992 after „illegal“ referendums. Why is this time different ?

Madrid lost all legitimacy when it unleashed paramilitaries upon peaceful people trying to vote. When one needs to bludgeon little old ladies for peacefully expressing a opinion; you no longer have any legitimacy to govern.

EU Official Says No One Will Recognize Catalonia>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The EU and the Spanish government had better eat a few smarten up pills. They need to negotiate fiercely.

Here are some nations that WILL recognize Catalonia:

1) North Korea
2) Iran
3) Yemen
4) Syria
5) Somalia
6) Cuba

Nothing like having an export base for terror right on the European continent.

As I said in another thread: This seems to me to be a “no good guys involved” situation.

Barcelona/Catalonia was a key center for the Communists in the Spanish Civil War, FWIW. There would seem to be echos of that in today’s Catalonia, based on some reports.

Gen.Blather has commented, “I think the Catalonia thing would be an excellent opportunity to ignore world events until they sort themselves out.”

I strongly concur. This is not a situation that cries out for US involvement/leadership.

True, but making it clear to the Catalonian separatists that they have no international support will help in the resolution of this situation.

“I think the Catalonia thing would be an excellent opportunity to ignore world events until they sort themselves out.”

--------------------------- Excellent line, that would apply to 99.9% of world events besides Catalonia. Whatever Catalonia is communist or muslim doesn't matter, it is a necessary pushback against globalism and the corrupt and arrogant EUSSR and it's high time. What goes around comes around.

Aw, but why not recognize it? Two peoples, two nations, after all. I’m not the Foreign Minister, but I think Israel should recognize Catalonia. They’ve been the victims of languagism and prejudice for generations. Even Ernest Hemingway got into it in For Whom The Bell Tolls.

So what about what are we going to do when local city/county officials vote to secede from the union ir there a rule book to follow on secession?

This is remnants of ETA and the Basque separatists movement, born in 1950 and fomented by communists.

Yes, they deserve a vote on their independence, but all of Spain needs to vote on it not just the erstwhile revolutionaries who were still assassinating people up to 2011.

When a particular region votes to secede without the whole country voting, that’s called a civil war — only it won’t be civil now and the separatists won’t win. Just as it should be.

It makes one wonder. I once read that it was his experiences in Stalinist Catalonia that gave George Orwell the ideas for his iconic novel “1984.”

And what happened to the CSA....I'm surprised that Portugal has managed to not be absorbed by Spain....I guess they really had no choice but to go the "EU Way" and are small enough to not make any ripples in the scum of that pond.

The European Deep State modeled after the Washington, DC Deep State.

There is nothing they despise more than arrogant provincial hayseeds thinking they have a right to freedom, independence and self determination.

I’m agnostic on Catalonian independence.

But the EU, with its heavy-handed interference, has made the situation worse. Spain and Catalonia should have been left alone to work this out for themselves.

You stated your argument well. I agree with you. A nation cannot exist without the support of other nation. Catalonia has no support.

If Catalonia does become independent, the people will soon be slaves in their own country. Catalonia will be controlled by Islamists that the leftists have welcomed in.
