“Here are some nations that WILL recognize Catalonia:
1) North Korea
2) Iran
3) Yemen
4) Syria
5) Somalia
6) Cuba
Nothing like having an export base for terror right on the European continent.”

This is what might happen if California broke with the US. Their instant economic crisis would give enemies of the US an intro into the US with a long border to infiltrate. Think we’ve got problems with the Mexican border? At least the Mexicans manage what comes in from their ports. (Sure, drugs. But drugs aren’t dirty bombs, barrels of poison sufficient to destroy water supplies and frozen bacteriological weapons.)

Right On! Right On! Right On!

Laissez-faire is generally the best response especially in matters that are none of our business.

Read Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia, and yes, absolutely so. It’s a quick read, I found it very interesting.

The Dodgers will never leave Brooklyn. Man will never fly. Trump will never be President.

Actually, if California secedes it’s possible that Mexico might stake a claim to it since the treaty ceding California to the US was made with the US, not California.

It is 1776 for them.

But it's no longer 1776 for the rest of the world. No nation will be recognized as legitimate today if fewer than 4 of 10 of it's people have expressed the desire for independence.

Sure would be fun if Trump recognized them...just to kick the EU in the teeth.

I keep hearing that Catalonia (relative) prosperity pays the tax bill for the rest of Spain. Perhaps true, but the picture changes when they have to raise an army, Navy & Airforce to protect their new borders. That’s on top of the socialist spending programs of their local government. Unless they can make themselves ‘Switzerland’(Spain controls that outcome) then they are in for a rough stretch, fighting or no.

This is like California trying to be independent from the USA. Iran, NK, Somali, Syria and Cuba will immediately recognized iCA as a country and an ally.

...not to mention the cost of purchasing all the stuff in Catalonia that was built by Spain.

We are told here in the US that if any state dare claim independence that it would have to purchase the highways, dams, etc. from the Feds if it wanted to break free.

Why would it be any different for the Catalonians?

"The Catalans have every right to self-determination."

You do realize that the Catalans are communists, right?

IMO, the DNC will not let California secede. Their electoral votes alone make them invaluable to them.

Nor should anyone expect them to!

I dont know where people get the idea that recognizing breakaway parts of the metropolitan territory of a nation has ever been the norm unless it was negotiated between the two opposing sides or if that breakaway part wins an actual war on independence. It creates a diplomatic nightmare, obligates you to defend them, and reeks of meddling in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state.

Not to mention it removes any grounds for that same nation to then stop a similar movement in their own territory.

“but I think Israel should recognize Catalonia”

I think you mistake real life for a computer game here.

Israel does that, and THEN what? Create a massive headache for themselves for no benefit at all.

Recognition does not make you a nation or else N. Cyprus would be one.

Let's hope cooler heads prevail and this can be resolved peacefully and with Catalonia remaining part of Spain.

One possible solution would be to move the Spanish capital from Madrid to Barcelona. Then they would have nothing to bitch about.
