As NFL players continue to protest by kneeling during the national anthem, China offers them food for thought.

The communists in China are considering making it illegal to "disrespect" their national anthem. Violators could face up to three years in prison.

Hmmm. Haven't a number of them done 3 years in prison already? Anyway, to a lot of them, compared to this hell hole they're currently living in, China may be just the ticket for them. I mean since they're all experts on oppression. The only reason they should be on their knees is to thank God they live in the U.S. and not some 5th world country where they just might get an up close look at actual oppression. Nike deal not enough money? Oh, I'm so oppressed. Ungrateful snot syndrome.

Instead of being "players", they'd be "[Very Near] Future Organ Donors".

I believe that Iraq fed part of their soccer team into a plastic shredder because they lost a game.

At the time it seemed like a horrible idea. But I’m starting to see the logic ...

Not showing respect for The Star Spangled Banner is a form of “speech,” exactly as burning a flag is. But what exactly does that “speech” communicate?

That is, the issue is the point that Pablo Picasso made when he was asked of one of his paintings, “What does it mean?” Picasso replied to the effect (memory a bit weak on the specifics) that if he was able to express that verbally, he would have done so instead of creating the painting. The import of the painting is the feeling the sight of it inspires in the viewer - not the words he might articulate later/separately about that feeling.

The feeling I get from disrespect shown to patriotic symbols is separation/detachment from the persons showing the disrespect. Back when the issue was demonstratively burning flags, I proposed that Congress assign the articulation of that feeling, in words, as the legal definition of the meaning of demonstratively burning a flag.

The idea I proposed was that whoever televised a flagburning presumptively meant that they wanted to leave the country and abandon their citizenship. And in my proposal, they would be able to sell their citizenship to a foreigner who wanted - and deserved - it. The demonstrator and broadcaster would be given free air fare to the country of their choice - unless they denied in court that that was what they meant.

In the current context, the meaning of the disrespect to the anthem is, as far as I can see, that the players protest the fact that they are allowed to, and paid big bucks to, participate in professional sports. Whereas their ancestors were not allowed to do that.

In reality, of course, they are protesting the extent to which having slave ancestry is not a title of nobility.
