Officer: Freddie Gray didn't appear to need medical care

A Baltimore police officer involved in arresting a black man who later suffered a fatal injury during a police van ride testified at the driver’s disciplinary hearing Tuesday that the man did not show any signs he needed medical care when he was first put into the van.

Officer Edward Nero testified at the hearing for Officer Caesar Goodson, the van driver who could be fired for violating department policies in the case.

“He was not showing any signs of a medical emergency,” Nero, a certified emergency medical technician, said of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died about a week after his April 2015 arrest from a fatal spinal cord injury.

The testimony comes as Neil Duke, an attorney for the police department, is arguing before a three-member disciplinary panel that Goodson should be fired, partly for failing in his duty to take Gray to a hospital after he requested medical care.

But Nero testified that people who are arrested often request medical attention to avoid jail.

“It’s very common to have that,” Nero testified. …

Freddie killed himself—albeit more slowly than “normal”—through a lethal combination of excited delirium and beating his previously injured head/spinal chord against the van interior.

Suicide by cop comes in many forms.

My best guess: Freddie was taken on a Nickel Ride.

Yes. Handcuffed and shackled then tossed in the van with no seatbelt restraints. I’m sure they took every corner extra sharp for him.

What was he arrested for? Running from the police?

May be ‘old’ stuff but apparently they waited till things ‘cooled down’ so they could hang at least ONE of the officers involved today was his first or second day of ‘trial’.

Those that were brought ‘quickly’ to trial were quickly exonerated.

This is a disciplinary board hearing. He was exonerated of criminal charges by a judge but this hearing is to see if he keeps his job. Going on now.

Not true. At trial the defense used Baltimore street/store cameras to follow the police van route from start to finish. There were no sudden stops, starts, swerving, or speeding.

There was video of the police van with Gray inside prior to leaving the arrest site. It looked like there was an uncaged Tasmanian Devil inside causing the vehicle to sway madly from side to side. The van had only gone ~a block before it stopped, as the driver now on trial called the arresting officers for help. They soon arrived and repositioned Gray on his belly on the van floor so his frenzied gyrations wouldn’t keep the driver from safely proceeding. There was also video of a very hostile crowd growing in numbers and shouting threats at officers, so decisions had to be made and action taken without the luxury of time and reflection.
