Homelessness soars on West Coast as cities struggle to cope

SEATTLE (AP) — Housing prices are soaring here thanks to the tech industry, but the boom comes with a consequence: A surge in homelessness marked by 400 unauthorized tent camps in parks, under bridges, on freeway medians and along busy sidewalks. The liberal city is trying to figure out what to do.

"I've got economically zero unemployment in my city, and I've got thousands of homeless people that actually are working and just can't afford housing," said Seattle City Councilman Mike O'Brien. "There's nowhere for these folks to move to."

That struggle is not Seattle's alone. A homeless crisis is rocking the entire West Coast, pushing abject poverty into the open like never before.

As the West Coast’s economy booms and more people move to the area, the number of homeless people has spiked to crisis levels. The Associated Press found that the number of homeless people is now 168,000 in California, Oregon and Washington.

Public health is at risk, several cities have declared states of emergency, and cities and counties are spending millions — in some cases billions — in a search for solutions.

San Diego now scrubs its sidewalks with bleach to counter a deadly hepatitis A outbreak. In Anaheim, 400 people sleep along a bike path in the shadow of Angel Stadium. Organizers in Portland lit incense at an outdoor food festival

which came first?...the drug addiction or the mental illness....

I actually have very little sympathy for the Seattle camps...they should have been closed down at the start....

Not San Jose, but Seattle. But your point still stands. They could get a small studio for a lot less than that.

Yes they will. They’re already starting it in some cities by calling it a “crisis” and using public funds to address homelessness.

They’ve already labeled tech as the demonseed which brought about this apocalypse, so now they’ll tax the shit out of them and find a hundred ways to skim the newly-drawn milk...

Our son has lived in Orange County since 05. Currently he answered 2 roommates rent a house in Santa Ana for 1500 a month. Not fancy but big and more than adequate. Here in Austin Tx there are homes in the multimillions, all the way down to affordable, just like in California.

We lived in So Calf 1988 to 1990, 1997, 2001, 1007 to 2007, 2012 to 2013. There are expenssive places in Dallas, Houston, Austin, etc. Just like in Calif. My sister bought a brand new house, 2500
sf, 4 bed, 4 bath, 3 car, in Victorville Ca. $150K. Lost money when she sold it too.

Nephew bought brand new home, big, gorgeous, in Sanra Clarita Ca, paid same price per sf as we paid NW Austin

Affordable homes and apartments exist in Calif

L8ved in California 5 times. Didn’t find it so expensive. Lived in San Marino, Pasadena, Claremont, Rancho Cucamonga, then Claremont again. There are very expensive areas here in Austin. Hyde Park, Boulder Creek, Travis heights, Lakeway... etc... you pay millions for a run down tiny house on postage stamp lot. Often with no driveway or garage. Location location location. Our house NW of Austin costed exactly the same as our nephew’s house in Santa Clarita, both brand new, about same size.

We chose to live out in the boonies, in Balcones wildlife preserve area, overlooking Lake Travis
