Christmas Music Can Harm Your Mental Health, Psychologist Says

November 8, 2017 2:45 PM

CBS Local — Are you one of those people that can’t stand hearing Christmas songs months before the holiday actually arrives? Does hearing festive carols weeks before Thanksgiving only make you upset that you haven’t eaten your turkey yet? A psychologist in Great Britain says your reactions don’t make you a Grinch because too much Christmas music is actually bad for your mental health.

Clinical psychologist Linda Blair claims the constant barrage of Christmas tunes too early in the season forces people to remember all the things they have to do before the holiday. Blair says the songs are a reminder to buy presents, cater parties, organize travel, and all the more stressful chores during Christmas.

“You’re simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you’re hearing,” Blair tells Sky News.

The psychologist added that store workers are most at risk for being worn down by the catchy beats. She states that hearing the same songs over and over each day make workers struggle to “tune it out” and they become “unable to focus on anything else.”

“Christmas music is likely to irritate people if it’s played too loudly and too early,” Blair explained to reporters.

Still was better than “We Are the World.” (That’s not saying much)

I could do without that one or bruce springsteen’s ‘christmas’ song. Just about any halloween music is awful. At least my grocery store now has egg nog for the season.

I agree. Songs like “Santa Baby” or “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” can lead one to violent acts. Just sayin’

Phew. That'd be 6-5 and pick 'em.

I'll still stick with my original premise, because it has Bono's line. About the most un-Christmaslike sentiment that could be stuck in a song.

We are the World is a very close second, though.

I heard a gangsta rap/scat compilation mix of Christmas Carols over the Muzak at the mall last week. It was pretty excruciating, but I only heard it once. If it starts to make the rounds and get replayed, it may displace "Do They Know..." on my naughty list.

It’s Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra where I work. Anything played over and over drives you nuts after awhile.

Even customers are asking for a change.

A station here started Christmas music yesterday. I flipped it on and that was the first one I heard.

No mention of “Dominick, the Italian Christmas Donkey”. I heard that once a few years ago and still convulse at the memory.

That one must've been regional and never was picked up by radio stations down south. I didn't hear it until a few years ago, on XM. It makes even the Yogi Yorgesson stuff seem tolerable, by comparison.

The worst Christmas song I know of is "Dem Revolutionär Jesus zum Geburtstag" (to the revolutionary Jesus on his birthday), a Communist "Christmas carol" sung by Communist balladeer Ernst Busch. The song praises Jesus as a revolutionary who fought against the state and industrialists but nonetheless died in vain, and following his death, things remained as they were. I would post a link to the song, whose melody sounds like an old Lutheran hymn, but it has disappeared from Youtube.

Busch's greatest hits include Stalin, Friend and Comrade (1949) and The Song of the (Socialist Unity) Party (1950), the anthem of East Germany's ruling party--"in the spirit of Lenin, forged by Stalin."
