With the fall of the Islamic State group's last significant stronghold in Syria, Iranian and Russian-backed Syrian troops now turn to face off with their main rival, the U.S.-backed forces holding large oil fields and strategic territory in the country's north and east.

The complicated map puts U.S. and Iranian forces at close proximity, standing just across the Euphrates River from each other, amid multiple hotspots that could turn violent, particularly in the absence of a clear American policy.

There are already signs.

ISIS is defeated. The US should pull out and let Assad have his whole country back. The Kurds should get the northern part of Iraq. What could be simpler? It’s as close to undoing the damage we’ve done in that neighborhood that we can get.

Let’s airdrop McCain in northern Syria (parachute optional) and let him mount a stand against Assad now that his ISIS proxies in Syria have been defeated.

Assad would do well to have a Kurdish buffer zone between Syria and Turkey.

Kurds needs to get some principles and integrity. They have a long history of bad alliances to worst actors for promise of land. And they lack integrity in these alliances too.

Why would you do that when he's almost clean now?

My money is on Mattis and Trump to do the right thing. It is not that there is a new player in the game since last November - it is a new ballgame, so to speak.

Exactly. This idiotic strategy will only unite Syria, Iraq and Turkey with Iran.

Hopefully Trump will find a way to get out of Syria.

If we really wanted to limit Iranian influence in the region, we need to do the opposite of what we have been doing since 2003.

Everything that had been done by the neocons and globalists has empowered Iran. Now the neocons and globalists are pushing some huge apocalyptic war in the Middle East to “stop Iran” after years of their policies making Iran powerful and giving Iran allies.

Reality check: Most people will choose Iran over al-Qadea or even Saudi Arabia. You don’t want to set that up as the choice for people. You isolate Iran by reducing Sunni terrorism and instability in the region. Then other countries and factions don’t need Iranian help to fight those things. Once that’s has been achieved, countries like Iraq and Syria and can be peeled away from Iranian influence.

If this war neocons are cooking up breaks out, most right wing people under 60 will take Iran’s side openly. That’s true of both American and Europe.

The problem with Arab people is they rarely produce strong leaders like Saddam. Iran would naturally expand influence over them without guys like him.
